Midnightsun and Northern Lights

This is the Deal

Organic Status: since 1975 ecological (organic-biological)

Winter has arrived and not much job to do. So it can be problems to host.

We see it as an advantage to have two volunteers during the same period. It is also an advantage if they have different sex. But not necessary.

Please. Do not send bulk or spam inquiries! Bulk inquiries are sending the same message to many hosts or farms simultaneously. Send to one or two and wait for the answer.

We usually can not accommodate more than two helpers at a time.

We are trying to live and have our farming as it is durable, strong, solid, stable, long-term, lasting, sustainable and rugged. It is organic and we try to treat animals and nature in an ethical dignity. We try to have an ethical, humane and humanistic relationship with the people who deserve it.

We live in the northern part of the planet Earth. All our work is therefore adapted to nature, and we follow the rhythm of nature as much as possible. This means that during the winter period (snoe covers the land from beginning of November to end of April), which is about six months long, are working day is rather short. It is difficult to perform meaningful work unless you have the special skills that we need at the time. It's dark, it's cold and it's a lot of snow.

We have no spring (sometimes a week), summer is two months and the autumn three to four months. This means that we have to work very hard when the weather is not impossible for work. In summer, the sun is up day and night. It never gets dark. The working days are during the most intense time from waking until you fall asleep. What is not done when it is possible to do it you/we have to wait for the next year.

Nature's rhythm and weather characterizes the culture that we are living in. Very important: There is no free-time - like work six days of a week or six hours during the day and then free. When we work - everybody else work.

It is best to be here about three weeks. A shorter period does not give you as much knowledge and us not much help either. Time spent on the introduction and instruction. Longer time is possible but the chances are that you will be tired of the intense work.

For everything to work as good as possible, we are grateful that you follow our schedule, our culture, our table manners, our time, our rules, and eat our food. We are not interested in your culture's habits and behavior applied in our environment or how you eat food or eating habits. We might eat for lunch the same food that you eat for breakfast. But accept our way of life and habits of the very short time you stay here. When we visit your region, we are however very interested in your culture and your food and the behaviors that are specific right there.

Our food is, if possible, and mostly organic and depending on the season also grown by us here. Since the food we eat here the most is superior to that possible to eat at the best restaurants in quality and taste, so take this opportunity and enjoy our food. Do not destroy it with chili, lemon or ketchup unless we used it in any right form.

We try to leave as little footprint and bad problem to future generations as we can. We are still not particularly extreme in that regard.

The electricity we consume comes from wind power to 100%. We have a ten-year contract with a wind energy company. The price is fixed during the whole time and costs about 1 SEK / kWh.

From late November to April or May we heat up the house and garage and hot water with wood. We consume about 100 cubic meters of wood each year. Sometimes more and sometimes less depending on how cold it is. To chop and haul wood home and cut and split it in the right sizes is a cornerstone of life here. We take trees from our own forest. The birch is dried for two years before it can be used. Other tree species that grow here can be dried in the year they are cut.

Other times of the year, we use summer solar heat. The sun shines during the summer period of the Earth. Earth warms up a few degrees to a depth of one meter. The heat pumps us up through a tubing system that is 1200 meters long. The hose is about 80 centimeters deep. When the snow has fallen on the earth acts as insulation of the highest quality. It is an alcoholic liquid which is pumped through the hose, and a heat exchanger converts to heat. It costs 1 kW electrical energy and at most you get back 5 kW power. When the temperature of the alcohol-water is +5 degrees and coming to the heat exchanger so sent it back with a temperature of about +1 degree and the water that goes into the houses have since been given a temperature of about +55 degrees. If the contained liquid is at a temperature of +1 degree as may be returned liquid has a temperature of - 3 degrees. The water inside the houses are still 55 + degrees. The heat taken up does not affect the Earth in any way. Currently, we estimate that heat the house with wood is three times as cheap as using solar earth heat. The difference is that the ground heat regulates itself automatically while wood requires a lot of work. Moreover, we can not afford to use solar earth heat during the winter.

We have our own water source that runs up to 63 meters deep. 33 meters ground and then 30 meters of rock. The water is extremely soft. The hardness is less deg dH. Medium hard water having a hardness level of 5-10A deg dH. It is important to know the hardness of the water in which one lives. Our water therefore requires only half as much tea, coffee powder, shampoo or detergent in places where you have hard water. If you do not know your own water hardness, we recommend that you find out about it and what it means. Eutrophication of water caused mainly by households to use too much detergent as well as the controversial farmers use too much fertilizer.

Our toilets and showers can only be used for what they are intended. The fluid infiltrated into the soil and energy recovery. The solid material is spread in the autumn on the field. The toilets are of the computerized bidet. No paper needed to be used if you want to conserve forest resources. Without toilet produces hot air. Using computer bidet is more environmentally friendly than the normal western toilet behaviors. But there are of course toilet paper for those who want to use it. Toilet paper is made from recycled grain short for rapid decay. Paper towels are made of virgin tree fibers for long cleanup. Paper towels should not be used in the toilet.

In Sweden, it is forbidden to throw rubbish. Everything should now be recycled and re-enter the cycle. We have our own compost household waste. This is legal. All other factions must be sorted and placed in their proper recycling bins. Here is a link to our municipal recycling system.

.....................
The coming periods, we focus on completing the surroundings of the houses. There is a lot of construction work to be performed, but also normal chores like gardening, cutting firewood, household chores and keep the fences in order so the animals do not escape.

If you ask, we will of course give all the knowledge we possess. Whatever it applies to anything. Your stay here will be a kind of family member. The same demands on you as on ourselves.

It is best if you are a couple that will. Two who are used to working together is the best, but it is otherwise well.

Many years ago we here lived in a kind of harmony with nature, more developed than permakulturen now stands for, but now we drink coffee and tea and other things also that we can not grow here.

Here are our main rules.
If work permits work, we work.
During the summer period there is no scheduled free time. Seeds must be planted, weeds must be eliminated, berries must be picked, the harvest must be addressed, firewood must be cut, houses must be painted, buildings must be finished inside as well as outside. The animals must be cared for. These are tasks that must be performed, and you can not wait to do the next day. We must follow the climate and nature. Some days can be very long. Everything is very intense here. The sun never sets. No dawn. No dusk.

This is not a place for relaxation. Sometimes, however, listen to the silence and see the northern lights flicker by.

Vegetables and berries picked just for our own and friends' household. In the river, we can catch fish which we then eat. The animals are out year round and during the winter they are just in the woods.

We have no ability to pay money for help from wwoofers or helpers.

This is a meat-eating region. This is the north. This is an arctic region. Vegetables we eat much of the fall. Otherwise is the meat a big part of our diet. We eat our animals and our animals eat only what their species has been developed. If you are vegan or vegetarian so there is no point asking whether to come here. The same if you want rest and relaxation. Smoking is not something that can be done on the farm or in the surrounding area.

Some of our forest is very unique. We have animals in the woods so they can eat the plants of the forest's ecological systems. In Sweden it is called skogsbete; forest pasture. It only existed in Sweden. Never in Europe during the last 1000 years. The forest is classified as forest grazing by the Swedish authorities. The method, which is the only existing sustainable agricultural production methods compatible, ended Swedish farmers in the late 1930's. However, there are scattered pockets of forest pasture left in Sweden. Our place is the only northern location on this planet. In principle, all other farms in the form of humans with different methods eating up the living creature that we commonly call soil.

My work in agriculture and forestry has hurt both my shoulders hard. Periodically, I have a lot of pain and can not work as when I was young. One shaft is also operated and has replaced the pin with a titanium ball and drilled into a titanium rod into the bone. However, this is only marginally reduced pain and improved the utility of the shaft.

In the forests around it are the lynx, deer, beavers, bears and moose. (In North America gave the white moose named moose., This because the elk was extinct in England when the first English immigrants came to North America. Too, foxes, ravens, owls, hawks, eagles and many animals are wild. Here.

The British English word "elk" has cognates in other Indo-European languages, for example elg in Danish / Norwegian; elk in English; Elch Ingerman, and Redeem Polish (Latin Alce or Alces and Greek· Alke are probably Germanic loanwords). Confusingly, the word "elk" is distressed in North America to refer to a different animal, the elk (or, less Commonly, the "wapiti", Cervus canadensis), Which is a similar though slightly smaller species (the second-largest deer species) and behaviorally and genetically divergent from the smaller red deer of central and western Europe. Presumably, early European explorers in North America called this species "elk" due to its size and, as people coming from the British Isles, They would have had no opportunity to see the difference between a member of the genus Cervus and an animal fitting the description of Alces back in Europe, absent there During the 17th and 18th centuries.
The word "moose" first Entered English village in 1606, and is Borrowed from Algonquian languages (compare the Narragansett moos andEastern Abenaki mos, According To early sources, These were most likely derived from moosu, meaning "he strips off"), and possibly Involved forms from multiple languages
Mutually Reinforcing one another. The Proto-Algonquian form was * mo· swa.

Winter season is from November to April. A lot of the time there is dark with few hours of daylight except april when the light has come back. Iblan can moon and stars give a ghostly glow as bright as if it were broad daylight. It can be quite isolated staying here during this period. It is also difficult to find meaningful jobs for those who are not used to the cold and to work in the woods. However, there is always a certain amount of work that must be done indoors but it's not so much.
Cleaning and maintaining houses and cooking are things that must always be done regardless of the season. Both daily and weekly basis.

Our agriculture and our living here is not based on that we need any help. When we get through, we are of course happy about this. The tasks can be a bit odd sometimes. This depends on the season and what a volunteer at the time can help us with.

We have always had insurance for those who come and help us if an accident should occur. This insurance applies regardless of where you come from. If you are from an EU country such as the European Union acquis. But it is a good idea to have your own insurance.

It is you who are responsible for asking about everything you do not have knowledge of. Question five times better than none at all if you are unsure. Tractors, cars, machines, tools, buildings, animals, etc., can be dangerous if you do not deal with them properly. And expensive damage to equipment may occur if the hand marine errors. So ask one more time and you never have accomplished the task, ask again so you understand.

Welcome Skills: you

Accomodation

In summer a small house with two beds and not so much more. It is just a place for sleeping. Shower and the rest is in our big house. We have also another little house. But that is for renting so we can not have any helpers there. You can see some photos on
my website
text is the same.

What Else

Read text carefully. Read it again. We are getting older every day and so our bodies. So the help we eventually will need can be anything for householding and on the farm. It is therefore better that you describe your skills and your possible skills. Maybe 2014 will be the last year we will need some help for exchange.
